Not a true palm but belongs to the same family as the bird of paradise plant. It has about 30 10-feet long green, fan-shaped leaves that resemble leaves of the banana plant. The stem of the travelers palm can store rainwater at the base which can be used as drinking water for travelers or in times of drought.

- Prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade
- Grows best in moist, well-drained soil
- Propagation by seeds of clump division
